Focusing on environmental issues, Susan has developed visual symbolism for life forms impacted by the elements and layered through time.
With painting as the foundation of her studio work, Susan is influenced by the fields, marshes, and Acadian forests of her rural environment. Tooke’s abstract landscapes show the layering of patterns, textures and subtle colourations of her surroundings. The groundscape works are inspired by the soil, plant life and debris of wilderness, reflecting on the various elements through the disassembling of time. Whether groundscape or landscape, these layers of life are moving and changing in complexity of time and place, together for one instant, then dissolving into the past with a fluidity of constant transformation.
